How to Choose the Right Contractor for Your Project

  1. What other projects are you currently working on?

Understanding their current workload helps you gauge their availability and bandwidth. Do their ongoing projects align with the scale or complexity of yours? Are the other projects located near yours? Does it sound like they may be managing too many jobs at once? The answer can offer insight into their capacity and whether your project will get the attention it deserves.

  2. Where is your business located?

Logistics matter. A contractor located far from your job site may face challenges meeting deadlines or responding quickly when needed. Ideally, choose someone with a presence close to your project’s location—it’s a sign they’re well-versed in the local market and ready to be hands-on.  If your project is in the area with their office and other projects, a lot of things become faster and easier.

  3. How large is your crew?

Not every project requires a large crew.  Are you remodeling a bathroom or undertaking a 5,000 square foot new build? The size of a contractor’s crew directly impacts their ability to handle multiple moving parts. A well-staffed team can keep progress steady, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and communicate seamlessly with your architect and interior designer. In this case, more really is more.

  4. What is your team’s specialty?

If your design includes custom cabinetry or detailed tile work, you’ll want confidence in the skills behind the work. Ask about the tradespeople they collaborate with—and be specific. Expertise in the areas most relevant to your project will ensure your vision is executed beautifully and precisely.  This is where having your design plan done first can help you have a more meaningful conversation. If you’re able to share your intended materials and renderings of the finished product you expect, the contractor will be able to tell you if he feels his crew is up to it.

  5. What is the estimated cost of the project?

While pricing is a necessary consideration, it’s not the only one. A lower estimate might reflect fewer resources, while a higher one might include greater oversight or premium craftsmanship. Balance cost with value, quality, and peace of mind. Having your design plan done ahead of time will always allow a contractor to give a more accurate price quote. You don’t want to be told after you pick your floor tile that now the price is going up because he assumed you’d pick something smaller. Being clear and specific from the start always sets a project up for success.

  6. Are you licensed and insured to work in this area?

This is a non-negotiable, and you’d be surprised that you even have to ask this question, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Some contractors conduct their business without a license or insurance, while some are licensed and insured, but not to complete work in your area. Don’t be afraid to ask for a copy of the contractors liscence and proof of insurance.  No reputable business person would be offended by that.

Search with Confidence–Your Project Deserves It

When investing in your home or business, every detail matters. There’s no such thing as asking too many questions—especially when you’re entrusting someone with your dreams. By approaching your search with confidence, clarity, and the right questions, you’ll be better equipped to choose a contractor who aligns with your lifestyle and vision.

We’re proud to support our clients through every phase of the process, offering design expertise and trusted guidance to help you create a space that’s thoughtfully executed and distinctly yours.
