Starboard Lane is an accessible brand designed as much for homeowners as interior designers, but mixing Caribbean colors and patterns on your own can be intimidating. How do you do this in a room while creating a balanced, sophisticated space instead of a random hodgepodge? We’ll show you how!
Vary the Scale
Balancing smaller and larger scale patterns allows you to showcase multiple patterns in a room without them fighting for attention. Pick one pattern to be the hero in the room and supplement with smaller splashes of contrasting scale patterns. Ideally, your hero pattern will invite a number of other colors into the space. It will both add color and be a unifying element in the rooom.

In this room, we created a backdrop with our Calypso Batik grasscloth wallpaper. The headboard is covered in our Spectrum Palm fabric, and the the bedding is a mix of Tabago Leaf, Island Breeze, Orchid Vine and Ti’punch. The variety of scale and movement in each pattern allows them to play well in the room together.
Color has the power to completely change our mood, so being intentional with it in the color choices in your home is important. The colorways in Starboard Lane collection make it easy to mix and match and know that it will all work together, so the hard work is done for you. When incorporating bold, Caribbean colors into a room, it’s important to start with a base palette and choose colors that complement it. Make sure if you have patterns of similar scale, they share a color palette so that they harmonize well.

In the room above, the neutral walls, side tables and bedding allow the blues and greens to really pop. The throw, pillow and lamp all complement each other and pull from colors in the painting above the bed for the perfect balance. Contrast is Crucial
If all the colors in a room are the same saturation, then nothing really stands out. Contrast is what sets certain elements apart and draws peoples’ eyes directly to it. The easiest way to incorporate contrast in a room is to start with a more neutral base and then add in pops of color and pattern that you want to stand out.

The blue and green accents in this room pull from the gorgeous surroundings of the USVI that inspired this color way. A neutral base in the sofa, rug and walls provide contrast for the accessories to stand out and draw in the beauty of the Caribbean colors of the outdoors effortlessly. Multiple fabric patterns are used in the custom pillows to provide contrast between geometric shapes, floral flowing designs, crisp and soft lines, and organic shapes.
If you want a luxurious space that feels like it’s meant to be lived in, incorporating the colors and patterns of Starboard Lane fabrics and wallcoverings can help create an eclectic, layered home that is a sophisticated escape from the every day.
