3 Tips for a Beach Home All Year Long
Rattan chairs are great to add a beach-like flair to any room.

As the long, lazy days of summer draw to a close and back to school is right around the corner, wouldn’t it be lovely to keep a bit of that summer time close all year round?

A beach feel in your home is calm and collected; it’s a feeling of relaxation, and comfort. Coastal style is inspired by the beauty of the natural world around us and the soothing effects of the sea. Follow these tips and tricks to making your home feel like a beach house all year long.

Top 3 Ways to Have a Beach Home Away from the Ocean

  1. Color and Texture

Start with sandy neutrals in a variety of tones and layer in texture. Sisal and other natural fiber rugs provide a great, textural backdrop for floors and add softness by layering a smaller size plush rug under your sisal. Don’t forget to treat all the surfaces, especially walls. Including a shiplap accent wall to a room or wainscoting in bead board adds classic style and warmth that can live at the beach or anywhere. Recently there have been so many new additions to the world of wallpaper; I love the grass cloth papers by Phillip Jefferies, they create such a cozy feel in a room, wonderful both by firelight in December and with all the windows open in July.

Finish with some pops of color inspired by the beautiful seaside itself, from navy blues and turquoise to sunset color inspirations.

  1. Accessorize

Bring home all those beachcomber finds from summer travel!  These can be arranged under glass as an accent table, placed in shadow boxes and hung on the walls with pictures from your travels, or simply displayed in tall glass vases with interesting shapes.  Add candles and family photos and you have a great conversation starter for your mantle.

When you travel to coastal locations, look for maritime salvage items to accent your home with a little touch of authentic nautical history.

  1. Furniture

Whether your style is casual and eclectic or sleek and modern, there is a version of the classic rattan chair that will work as an accent piece and change a room’s whole vibe. Look for furnishings with a natural, organic feel, rich wood grains and softly bleached shades. When choosing upholstered pieces, I love slipcovers; the casual ease can’t be beat and the ability to change out the upholstery with just a zip seasonally allows you to be a bit more daring with fabric choices.

Keep the warm, summer vibes all year long by turning your home into a beach house. Start with colors and textures, accessorize and buy the right furniture to complete the look.
