Every spring and fall, the design world quietly gathers in High Point Market in North Carolina. It’s the largest furnishings trade show in the world, and while it may not be on most homeowners’ radar, it’s where designers go to see what’s next.
Yes, we source for current projects. Yes, we place orders. But more importantly, we go to be inspired and to come home with a clearer sense of direction for the spaces we’re creating.
This spring, one thing was immediately clear: Suddenly, things got moody.
A Shift Toward Richer, Deeper Color
After years of light, airy, neutral everything, the showrooms felt different this season. Rich, saturated color was everywhere. Clay and terra cotta tones, plum, deep greens and olives, golden yellows, and warm, grounding browns.
It wasn’t just a color trend. It was a shift in mood.
Spaces felt more layered, more intentional, and a little more designed in the best possible way.
The Return of Detail (and Why It Matters)
Along with deeper color came something I personally love: detail.
We’re seeing more customization across the board. Sofas trimmed with fringe, chairs finished with brush fringe, upholstery layered with piping, and tailored details that make each piece feel considered.
This is the opposite of fast furniture.
Most of what you see online and ready-to-ship is upholstered in some version of white, cream, beige, or gray and for good reason. Those are the safest choices to work in the widest number of homes.
But safe isn’t the same as special.
When you work with a designer, and you’re willing to wait a bit longer, you open the door to something entirely different: pieces that are tailored, specific, and full of personality. Pieces that actually belong in your home, not just fit in your home.
Texture Is Everywhere (With a Caveat)
Texture is having a major moment.
There was no shortage of plush, fuzzy, and heavily tactile materials layered into upholstery and accessories. And while they’re beautiful, they don’t always translate directly to life in the Caribbean.
Let’s be honest, some of those fabrics make you sweat just looking at them.
But texture itself is essential.
In our world, that might look like:
• Wood finishes with visible grain and depth
• Chunky woven textiles
• Grasscloth wrapped furniture as well as wells
• Washable, low-pile velvets
• Materials that invite touch without trapping heat
Because true luxury isn’t just about how something looks, it’s about how it lives.
The New Luxury: Personal, Not Predictable
While at market, I had the opportunity to speak on a panel at the Antique & Design Center about global sourcing, a topic that feels especially relevant right now.
The idea of luxury is shifting. It’s less about brand names and more about individuality. Less about recognition and more about connection.
Luxury today looks like:
• Pieces that feel collected, not ordered all at once
• Materials that show the hand of the maker
• Custom details that make something uniquely yours
• A home that tells a story instead of following a formula
If someone loves a fully cataloged look, there are incredible resources at many big name chain stores that make that easy and accessible.
But for those who want something layered, personal, and lasting, that’s where hiring an independent designer becomes a valuable investment.
Our value lies in the ability to see the bigger picture, to pull from unexpected sources, and to create something that couldn’t exist any other way.
Translating It All for Island Living
Here’s where it gets interesting. As inspiring as these trends are, the goal is never to copy and paste them into a Caribbean home. It’s to translate them for the way we live and our unique perspective that’s informed by the island lifestyle.
Those rich, moody palettes? They soften here into driftwood tones, conch shell pinks, sage and celadon greens—colors that still have depth but feel at home in the light and air of the islands.
The heavy, plush textures? They become breathable layers—textiles that feel soft and inviting without feeling heavy or impractical.
The overall effect is the same: Layered. Collected. Intentional.
Just…lighter. Easier. More livable.
What This Means for Our Projects
We came home from market with (literally) stacks of new samples, fabrics, rugs, and wood finishes that reflect this direction.
What you’ll start to see in our work:
• More developed, nuanced color palettes
• A broader mix of tones pulled from across the color wheel
• Greater emphasis on texture and materiality
• Custom details that elevate even the simplest pieces
It’s still very much our version of barefoot elegance, just with a little more depth and richness woven in.
What This Really Confirms
Trends come and go. That’s part of the fun.
But the goal has never been to chase them.
It’s to take what’s inspiring, filter it through the lens of how we actually live, and create homes that feel effortless, personal, and quietly beautiful.
And this season? We’re just adding more pieces with soul and more unique details to the mix.
