“Float” your furniture away from walls for an inviting look.

Last week I gave you a variety of tips for updating your living room. These tips included buying new furniture, updating throw pillows and rearranging furniture. If you have decided to switch around your chairs, tables or sofa, there are right and wrong ways to do so; keep reading for five common mistakes to avoid.

5 Living Room Arrangement Mistakes

  1. Crowding Entry Ways

Be sure to leave plenty of room to enter and exit your living room. A wide open entrance will make the living room welcoming and inviting; the last thing you want to do is crawl over furniture to relax.

  1. Forgetting the Three Foot Rule

It’s a good rule of thumb to have three feet of walking space around the room. This helps the flow of the room and prevents your family and guests from bumping into furniture and walls. Additionally, any drawers or cabinet doors need special consideration to open properly.

  1. Shoving Everything On the Walls

While it may seem like the optimal way to create more floor space, arranging your couches and other seating against the walls can look uninviting to guests. Have your seating “float” off the walls for a cozy layout.

  1. Misplacing Rugs

Placement and rug size are incredible important to make your living room look full, yet bigger than it is. Make sure that either all table legs are completely on or off the rug; you don’t want to deal with a wobbly table.

  1. Poor Fixtures

Watch out for lamp shades that may be too big for their new placement; larger shades run the risk of being bumped or knocked over. Also, be mindful of cords so they don’t run through the middle of the room and people trip on them.

Rearranging your living room can make it feel like a brand new space and get you out of a spatial rut. Use these five tips to help you know what not to do when switching around your items.
