Making The Most of a Small Space

Whether it’s a rental apartment or a large residential retreat, space and how you make use of it can make the greatest impact on your interiors. At Lagnappe, this is one of the first things we look at when starting a project so we can get a feel of what we’re working with. We were recently featured on Redfin, where we had the opportunity to share a few tips on different ways to expand the feel of your home and we wanted to keep the conversation going! Thinking of starting a renovation project? We’ll outline two major key points for making the most of a small space.

1. Invite Natural Light in With Paint

As mentioned on Redfin, the color of your paint, as well as the type of paint, can change the dimension of your room. Paint is an easy and affordable way to brighten your space and create the illusion of a larger room. Lighter and brighter shades help with enlarging while specific types of paint can help direct light. For example, gloss finishes have a reflective nature so that any light coming in will be amplified. To learn more about paint options, read our most recent article here.

2. Hang Your Curtains High

When talking about space, square footage isn’t the only thing to consider. What you do with your walls and windows can add significant height to your room. A great way to create the illusion of sought-after high ceilings is to well, hang your curtains high! Instead of traditionally hanging your curtains or drapes a mere few inches above the top of the window, opt for a couple of feet higher, all the way to the ceiling if possible. It is equally as important to remember to size your drapery rods in a way that the drapes will stack back all the way off the glass. Not only does this technique heighten the feel of your home, but it also allows more light in. A double win!

These are two simple and affordable ways to quickly make the most of a small space. While they are both great to get a project going, another important starter tip: decluttering your home. You’ll be amazed at how much of a transformation just tidying up and getting rid of the nonessentials can create. To read up on a few more tips and tricks like these, don’t forget to check out Redfin.

We hope you feel confident and inspired to make the most of your home, no matter the size.
